I was born in Watlington, Oxfordshire, and educated at Lord Williams Grammar School, Thame, Oxfordshire.  I spent my professional life as a photographer, firstly in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm, followed by a career in industrial, commercial photography & film making in Oxford’s automotive industry, before spending 10 years creating audio-visual presentations,  and finally moving to sales & marketing in the same field.

On retirement I trained as an Oxford Green Badge Guide, and have enjoyed this occupation for the past 11 years. My other interests are local history, reading, walking, photography, seagoing travel and bellringing.

I’m a qualified Green Badge guide for this wonderful city and I love showing visitors around the stunning architecture and bringing Oxford alive with stories of the fascinating individuals past & present, real and fictional, who have known these streets and strolled around the colleges and quads.

In addition to giving you a general introduction to the city and university I can take you on tours focusing on C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien, on the Oxford of Morse and Lewis (and Endeavour), on Harry Potter or Alice in Wonderland.  I’m also particularly interested in Oxford’s religious and scientific history.

IAN MITCHELL

I arrived in Oxford over 40 years ago when I became a lecturer at Oxford Brookes University. On retirement I took history courses at Oxford University, qualified as a Bodleian and Green Badge Guide and became a member of the Oxford Guild of Tour Guides.

I love the fascinating history and glorious beauty of Oxford. I provide general tours where we walk in the footsteps of authors and their fictional characters, scientists, politicians, world leaders, and stars of film and TV through college quads and gardens. I also have a particular interest in architecture, science and medicine and provide tours focusing on these areas. I aim to inform and entertain and be adaptable. Tours should be fun and I love questions as we go. My experience in university education and my family links with Cambridge and Oxford helps me explain the particular nature of Oxford University to those considering studying here.

EDWARD TAYLOR

As an Oxford resident and Green Badge guide I've been welcoming people to the city of dreaming spires for the last three years. I’ve found that exploring the University at a relaxed pace allows everyone to soak up the atmosphere of the famous colleges and gardens, while learning about the traditions, and the fascinating stories of students and fellows, past and present.

Often I lead specialist tours such as the Oxford of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien, and the history of science and medicine at the University. I take many student groups but also families, societies, and prospective Oxford students. I like tailoring a tour for the needs of my clients, and usually include a recommendation for the best taverns or restaurants for refreshment afterwards!

Now qualified as a Blue Badge guide for the Heart of England, I enjoy guiding on trips beyond Oxford to the Cotswolds, Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon, Blenheim Palace and many other attractions in the region.
